I really enjoyed this book. I think it worked very well as an artifact of 1959 and as an enjoyable work of fiction. This was the hardest to put down book I've read in a few months. I've read a lot of post-apocalyptic fiction but very little apocalyptic fiction. To actually have the bombs drop in the book really does add some interesting things. To imagine that people in 1959 lived with this scenario as a real fear is incredible. Lastly, for a book that deals a fair bit with race and gender in FL in 1959 I only cringed once which was pretty impressive. I think there are two downsides. The first is the writing is pretty run of the mill. It isn't bad but it doesn't inspire. Additionally many things work out a little too neatly including the end of the book. The end feels like the author running down a checklist and tying up every loose end as neatly as possible. Those two complaints aside I loved it.
