Review

Another Boss Fights Books... book. I liked this one, the author Gabe Durham is the founder of Boss Fight Books. I'm glad that he contributed to the series and I think he picked a great game. This is one of the books that is about more than just one game, it's about a developer. Wisdom Tree released games for the Christian Games market (a thing the more or less invented) during the heyday of the NES. The "hook" of this story is that the guys making these games were all atheists. I didn't find that particularly shocking or interesting. But the overall narrative I enjoyed. I've read a lot about more successful companies making games during this era so reading about a smaller, less successful company making mostly bad games was interesting. What really tied it together and why I like this series so much was the author's perspective. Durham grew up in a fairly devout family and much of his youth was based around church activities. He played Bible Adventures as a child but grew away from religion. This gives him both an intimate connection to the games discussed in the book, but also a very good point of view for interviewing the developers and looking at the somewhat exploitative business model that birthed these games. I'd recommend this book.
