Review

I wanted to like this movie, but really it just reminds me of Idiocracy - great concept, poor execution. I think it has a lot of problems but the real cardinal sin was the characters. It can't seem to decide if it wants Jennifer Lawrence to be unjustifiably disliked, or actually unlikable. DiCaprio's character is frankly confusing, not sure where they were going with it but it certainly didn't land. Even more confusing is Rylance, just... what? I could understand Jonah Hill's character, it was just bad. Streep and Blanchett both did well and had probably the two best written roles if not for Chalamet's late addition. Perlman on the other hand felt like a cheap stunt and him showing up on screen half a dozen times for a one note joke was entirely unnecessary. Also while I don't dislike the end, it was poorly done. The writers and director could have all stood to watch Dr Strangelove another dozen times. And I will admit some of my ill will toward the movie comes from comparing the two, but I didn't expect this to be as good, but I wanted it to be serviceable and it isn't. I could nitpick this movie for days but frankly, what's the point? This is a movie that wants to elevate Adam McKay as a director but rather shows his limitations.
