Review
The Year of the Flood is a sequel to Oryx and Crake but I had no idea what to expect going into it. O&C was a fantastic book but the entire time I was reading it my thoughts were “how does a sequel work?” Well, it worked pretty well. YotF is a very different book from O&C. That said, I think it works very well as a sequel. The book is set more or less at the same time as O&C but with a different, wider cast. The events of O&C are pretty important to the world so you see them here. One thing that kind of caught me off guard was how grim the book was. O&C was NOT a book about happy people in good times, it was pretty dark. But this one tops it, at points it was kind of painful to read. All-in-all for a book as hard to follow up as O&C this was a great sequel. I’m really looking forward to the last book of the series because it’s still a question of where the series is going to go next. I really look forward to that, I enjoy trilogies where it’s not a set A, B, C story with the same cast.
